Each and every festival is celebrated with great joy and devotion in India. The Maha Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years and Ardh Kumbh in every six years. It is a festival where people of all Hindu religion come and dip in Holy water for their salvation. This year Kumbh Mela is happening in Allahabad (15 January -4 March).
It has been reported that daily 5 Lakh people have taken a dip in Holy water from 21-30 January. According to the latest data, 7.49 Cr people have come and bathed in the waters of Sangam. Today Kumbh will witness more crowd as compared to the other past days and years.
Story behind Kumbh Mela
The story behind Kumbh Mela dates back to the time when all the devas were residing on earth. They were threatened by asuras. Lord Brahma advised to devas to use nectar of immorality to get rid of asuras. After 12 days of this chase, the nectar fell in the Holy waters of 4 rivers. They were Haridwar (river Ganga), Prayag (Triveni Sangam of Yamuna, Ganga and Saraswati), Ujjain (river Kshipra), and Nasik (river Godavari).
Now, Kumbh Mela is celebrated on specific dates. It is believed that the nectar of immortality is said to return to the waters of these Holy Rivers.
