End of special status an internal matter- India on nullification of Article 370

On 6 August, 2019- the nullification of Article 370- ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir has been the hot topic of discussion. On Friday, 16 August, 2019 the UN Security Counsel’s closed consultation meeting, the Indian Ambassador, Syed Akbaruddin has accused China and Pakistan intruding in the internal matter of India. Since the day, this Article has been nullified, Pakistan has set itself on an alarming situation. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan also approached to China to seek the state’s vote on this matter.

Syed Akbaruddin said;

“The Security Council is a very deliberative… institution. It works in a very considered manner, Its outcomes are provided to all of us through the UNSC President. So if national statements try to masquerade as the will of the international community, I thought I will come across to you too and explain our national position.”

What was Article 370?

Under Article 370, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was grated special status, under which the rules and regulation amended for other states of India, will not be applicable on the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Now, the government of India has declared Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as Two Union Territories.

Syed Akbaruddin also added;

“The abrogation of Article 370 was done to enhance good governance and socio-economic development in Jammu and Kashmir and the UNSC consultations had taken a note of this.”

The Valley was seized and some ministers were under house arrest since August 4, 2019 to avoid any riots or violence outbreaks. Since that day, until today morning there were no mobile connections or access to internet. The press was also barred from carrying out any of their daily activities. Despite, this lock down in Jammu and Kashmir, the people of this valley celebrated the festival of Eid peacefully.

Views of various political leaders of India on Nullification of Article 370

Rahul Gandhi said;

“National integration isn’t furthered by unilaterally tearing apart J&K, imprisoning elected representatives and violating our Constitution. This nation is made by its people, not plots of land. This abuse of executive power has grave implications for our national security.”

Chief Minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda quoted;

“My personal view is that there isn’t a need to have Article 370 in the 21st century.”

Jaiveer Shergill added;

“My Personal Point of View: I support abrogation of Art 370 (as opening words say it’s temporary) but Only and Only in accordance with provisions and methodology provided by the Constitution of India which mandates consent of J&K State Assembly -any other way is Unconstitutional.”

Gargi Rohatgi:
