Lunar eclipse 2020: World is going to witness its first lunar eclipse of the year 2020, happening on 10th January. This eclipse will survive for 4 hours and 5 minutes. It can be sighted in the Asian, African and European countries but will not be visible in the US because it will be day time there while the lunar eclipse will happen.

This eclipse is one of the four penumbral eclipses scheduled for this year. Its visibility in India is scheduled to happen on 10th January, 10:37 pm according to IST.

Lunar eclipse

As we know the moon does not have a light of its own, its visibility is due to the sunlight it reflects. If this light coming from the sun is blocked then there in no visibility of the moon thereby know as a lunar eclipse. This generally happens when Earth falls on the midline or between sun and moon, and the moon gets blocked with light, resulting in a lunar eclipse.

  • Penumbral lunar eclipse: This occurs when the moon passes through the penumbral shadow of the earth. This eclipse is pretty hard observed.
  • Partial lunar eclipse: This occurs when a part of the moon passes through the Earth’s umbral shadow. This eclipse is pretty easy to observe. It can be observed through unaided eyes.
  • Total lunar eclipse: This occurs when the complete moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow and moon earth and sun fall in the same line. This eclipse is generally coined with the term blood moon night. Because complete eclipsed moon appears blood red in color.

This penumbral lunar eclipse 2020 will be visible in Asian, African and European countries.

Precautions to be taken

During every eclipse, there is a release of unhealthy strong Electromagnetic waves. So it is recommended to avoid the stale prepared food which was cooked and stored during the eclipse.

Watching lunar eclipse with naked eyes is no harm. So eager ones can have a view of it without any aid. But if you still feel a little unsafe then ray protective glasses would help.
