We are talking about Reita Faria who gave India the first title of MISS WORLD 52 years ago. Along with India, she was also the first Indian woman to win the world beauty title in Asia.
Mumbai-born Reita Faria is the first Indian and Asian to become Miss World. After becoming Miss World in 1966, she refused to act in films and took the medical line.
She was the first such Miss World, who is also a doctor (physician) by profession. He gave India this honor in the world on 17 November 1966. Following in his footsteps, India has so far received six Vishv Sundari and two Universe Sundari (MISS UNIVERSE).
She modeled for nearly a year after winning this title. After, She said goodbye to modeling. But, In 1998, she re-entered in the fashion field and became the judge of Femina Miss India. She has also joined the competition as a judge.
Rita, who retired from modeling a year after winning this title, completed her MBBS studies at Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedji Jijabai Group of Hospitals in Mumbai. Then She went to King’s College and Hospital in London for further studies. In 1971, he married a young man named David Powell.
In 1998, she came back once in the glamorous life, but she could not stay in this glare for long. She currently lives in Dublin, Ireland with her husband endocrinologist David Powell. Both of them are practicing medicine here. And, they have two sons (Deirdre and Ann Marie) and also five grandchildren (Patrick, Comac, David, Maria, and Johnny).
