“Inappropriate content”- Nitish among other people demands OTT censorship of online streaming

Nitish Kumar was one among many other people who have demanded OTT censorship for all the online streaming because the content in the online streaming is very high on sexuality, physical abuse, and other forms of violence. Before this as well, there have been many instances in which people were seen demanding censorship for online streaming as they promote content with obscenity.

Nitish Kumar- the Chief Minister of Bihar demand OTT censorship on online streaming

The chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has just recently requested to PM, Narendra Modi in writing to impose OTT censorship on the explicit content shown on the various online streaming platforms. He demanded all the movies, web series, documentaries which stream online should now be under the censorship board so that the viewers cannot get access to “inappropriate content”. Nitish is of view that these OTT streaming platforms have been encouraging people to do violence against women and children and the same should immediately be censored to ensure that no person is given access to inappropriate content.

In his letter he wrote;

“streaming services have content that is not censored and subscribers easily get access to content that is high on violence, sex, and obscenity that negatively impacts the minds of the viewers, especially children. He said the airing of such content was not good for viewing for long duration and was already creating societal problems including crime against women and children.”

Along with the request to censor the online streaming content, the CM of Bihar also requested the Prime Minister to put a ban on pornographic content as it is greatly affecting the mental state of people and it at times also motivating them to commit a serious crime.

What did Nitish Kumar say in his letter to PM?

Nitish Kumar also said;

“The streaming services are cheaper than Direct to Home (DTH) and cable services, a reason why it has become more popular among consumers. As there is less clarity on legal provisions binding on the content aired through streaming services, uncensored stuff is getting aired without much advertisements in such programs.”

“There is an immediate need to categorize the production and airing of such inappropriate content through streaming services as an offense so that it could be checked. I urge the PM to look into the matter.”

Lastly he also added in his letter;

“The Centre must take steps to bring all programs that are streamed under the ambit of certification as per Cinematograph Act-1962 and also make necessary legal provisions so that those making inappropriate content and airing them should be punished.”

In today’s date, some of the most popular online streaming platforms in India are Amazon Prime, Netflix, Zee5, HotStar, ALT Balaji, SOnyLIV, Voot, etc. People these days are more drawn towards watching the online streaming content rather than what is being aired on television.
