What is Wi-Fi calling?

The main highlights about the all new Airtel Wi-Fi calling is that, now all the prepaid and postpaid users of Airtel can make calls without using their cellular network. This facility as of now is only available on latest iPhones and OnePlus mobile phones. For some time, the Airtel Wi-Fi calling will work using Airtel’s broadband connection.

There had been a silent battle between Airtel and Jio, the two most competitive telecommunication networks for launching the Wi-Fi calling facility. Finally, the feature of Airtel Wi-Fi calling was launched under the general feature of Airtel with a motive to make communication possible all around the world in each possible location.

How will this Wi-Fi calling feature work?

In case, if you are wondering how will this Wi-Fi calling work, then we have answer to this question. In simple words, the Airtel Wi-Fi call will allow all its prepaid and postpaid users to make calls to people using the Airtel broadband itself. This is different from the usual calling because, it does not rely on the cellular network.

Airtel Spokesperson said;

“Airtel Wi-Fi Calling is designed to enhance voice calling experience for Airtel smartphone customers, especially when they are indoors. With Airtel Wi-Fi Calling, customers with Wi-Fi at home or office will get excellent signal quality indoors,”
“There will be no extra charge for calls made over Airtel Wi-Fi Calling and the application consumes minimal data. The service is currently available to Airtel customers in Delhi NCR and will be gradually rolled out across India.”

Can you make use of Airtel Wi-Fi calling?

The Airtel company has announced that some people ca start making use of Airtel Wi-Fi calling feature if they have a compatible phone. At present, the Wi-Fi calling is supported by the following mobile phones-

  1. All the iPhones starting from 6s series. This list will include- iPhone 6s, iPhone 6sPlus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, iPhone 11, iPhone 11Plus and iPhone 11Pro Plus.
  2. Xiaomi Redmi K20, redmi K20 Pro and POCO F1.
  3. Samsung J6, Samsung A10s, Samsung M30s and Samsung On6.
  4. OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7Pro, OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7TPro

If you are a person who is having any mobile from the above-mentioned list of phones, then the next few steps which you need to follow are-

  1. The mobile phone should be updated with the latest operating system update.
  2. You must have an Airtel prepaid or postpaid connection.
  3. Customers should have Airtel broadband powered by Xstream Fiber.

How can you check the compatibility of your mobile?

  1. Update the device operating system.
  2. Click on the mobile setting option and further select Wi-Fi calling.
  3. Note that, you should not switch off VoLTE for no disturbance in calling.

If you do not have the above-mentioned mobile phones, then Airtel has also disclosed that soon this facility of Wi-Fi calling wil be compatible on all mobile phones and Wi-Fi hotspot devices.

Jio Wi-Fi calling coming soon
