Having its origin from the state of Kerala, Onam is an auspicious festival. It is celebrated in the month of Chingam according to the Malayalam calendar. This holy festival celebrates the Vamana avatar of Vishnu, the homecoming of their brave emperor Mahabali and mythological relations between Hinduism and Kashyapa.
People also witness the great and popular Onam carnival, which lasts for 10 days with non-stop merrymaking and celebrations.
Beautifully decorated Pookalam, Ambrosial Onasadya, thrilling Snake Boat Race and splendid Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable and attractive features of the Onam Festival. It is the harvest festival of Kerala.

Onam Food

Onam Festival being the most-awaited and glorious festival of the people of Kerala has a very rich and mouth-watering variety of food dishes. The main dish being Onam Sadhya. It is a vegetarian feast consisting of many different eateries, served on a banana leaf. The main dishes in Sadhya are Puli Inji, Cucumber Khichadi, Avial, Olan, Rice and Paruppu Curry, rasam, Sambar, Naranga Achar, Sharkara Payasam, Cabbage Thoran and many more.

Onam Dances

During this auspicious festival of Onam, the state becomes a beautiful stage for classical dances because Kerala has a very rich folk culture. In the 10 days carnival festival, one can note many different and breathtaking dances performed by the natives. Some of the dance forms are Kummatti Kali, Pulikali, Kathakali, Thumbi Thullal, and many others.
Hindus and Christians of Kerala also celebrate this Onam Festival. On this glorious day, people buy new clothes. Onakkodi is a tradition of buying new clothes for the Onam Festival. During this festival, people and devotees also install the image of Thrikkakara Appan or Onatthappan (Vishnu in the form of Vamana) in their houses.
