Born in Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin Gharana Pandit Birju Maharaj grew in a family with rich art and cultural heritage. As a kid, he was trained by his uncles namely Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj. Along with being trained in the Kathak form of Indian classical dance he received his training in vocals. That leaves him to be a combination of two massive art forms to which his dedication added a great charm and grace.
After having learned the art forms from his paternal gurus he went on enhancing and polishing his art at Sangeet Bharti in New Delhi. After all his learnings he began to spread the art form by teaching Kathak at various institutions. The first and the foremost school where he taught Kathak was the Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi and was head of the faculty at Kathak Kendra.
His graceful art gathered eyeballs since then he became a professional choreographer in the Indian film industry. His initial career began by writing and singing two of the music for dance sequences in a movie by Satyajit Ray. Later in the year 2002, he choreographed one of the phenomenal dances for the greatest movie of all time Devdas for the song Kahe Chhed Mohe. From then he choreographed some of the most phenomenal songs of all time including the song Mohe Rang Do Laal from the movie Bajirao Mastani.
