1) Kumbhalgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Talking of top 5 archaeological sites in India this fort is on number one spot. When one talks about the hilltop forts in the world, Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan is one of the largest forts in such category. It is also part of the 6 hill top forts list of UNESCO in Rajasthan. The Kumbhalgarh Fort came under the reign of Rajput clan and the Sisodia Rajputs. The king of this fort, King Rana Kumbha, is the person after which this fort has been named. He laid the foundation of the fort in the early 15th century AD when this area was named the capital of Mewar. Kumbhalgarh was as important area under the rule till the capital was shifted to more strategically important location of Udaipur.

The fort was made with the Hindu Rajput style of architecture and with touch of Persian style also. The walls of the fort extent to a distance of about 36 kilometers around a hilltop at a height of 1,100 meters above the sea level. This makes it the second longest ancient wall after the Great Wall of China. Inside the fort there are more than 360 Jain and Hindu Temples. From the top one can enjoy the view of the rich and thick hills of Aravalli which are also the oldest ranges in India.

2) Jaisalmer Fort, Rajasthan

Another fort from Rajasthan is the Jaisalmer Fort in the Jaisalmer city. It is said to be world’s largest fortifications till date. The most unique feature of this fort is that the fort now lies in the centre of the city, and the grandeur of the fort and the city can be viewed from far.
Not very far from the fort is the Great Thar Desert which is also a tourist destination. The fort looks to be made of gold, reflecting the sun and due to the yellow sandstone used to build the structure of great beauty.

3) Meenakshi Temple, Tamil Nadu

Meenakshi Temple is one of the main highlights of the Madhurai city in Tamil Nadu. Madhurai was established about 2000 years and is also amongst the oldest cities in the world. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess- Parvati, who is the consort of the deity Lord Shiva. There are multiple towers constructed with carvings of various god, goddess and animals with demons too. The exact date of the temple is not clear but it is said that it was made 2500 years ago by Lord Indra himself.

4) Khajuraho Temple, Madhya Pradesh

The great Khajuraho Temple is found in the Chhatarpur district of the Madhya Pradesh state. The temple dates back to 10th century and were made by the Chandela Rajput Dynasty. Mostly these temples are of Hindu gods and Jain sect. According to the data, there are about 85 temples in the area of just 20 kilometers. As of now, out of these 85 temples only 20 remains and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and also are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

5) Konark Sun Temple, Odisha

The famous Konark Sun Temple lies in the Indian state of Odisha and is also known as the Black Pagoda. This temple was built by the Eastern Ganga Dynasty during the 13th Century. This temple is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Konark Sun Temple is considered as one of the seven wonders in India. The temple is dedicated to the Sun and the shape of the temple is as a Indian Chariot with wheels carved beside the temple.
