Sinovac to begin with its COVID-19 vaccine trials on teenagers

As the COVID-19 cases continue to surge globally, Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac will begin its Coronavirus vaccine trials on teenagers and children later this month. As per the exclusive local news agency reports, Sinovac will begin the CornaVac vaccine trials on September 28 in the Northern Chinese Province of Hebei. Over 552 healthy candidates including children and adolescents will be given two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Sinovac’s CoronaVac vaccine to begin its trials on teenagers

After getting the approval for testing the COVID-19 vaccine which is currently in the middle of its Phase lll trails, the Chinese drugmaker is all set to begin with the next stage trials. The reports of the Sinovac’s Coronavirus vaccine trials so far reveal that the vaccine is absolutely safe and it was also successful in generating antibodies to fight against the pandemic outbreak. Over 3,000 employees of China’s Sinovac were injected along with their family members so that the company can achieve the target of acquiring production license by the end of 2020. The top sources from Sinovac said that another reason for giving doses of CoronaVac vaccine to its employees was to protect them from the rebound of the pandemic in winters.

COVID-19 outbreak in China

Over 30 million COVID-19 positive cases have been recorded globally. The first ever Coronavirus case was recorded in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Given the fact that the country has been successful in curbing the spread of the pandemic, it still maintains strict international travel bans as precautionary measures. In total three Coronavirus vaccines are currently in the phase three trials under the government approved-fast-track system and Sinovac’s CoronaVac is one among them. Apart from China, vaccine trials are also being conducted in Indonesia and Brazil.

COVID-19 vaccine

While speaking to media, Sinovac informed that it is capable of manufacturing 300 million doses of the vaccine by the end of this year. It plans to commercialize the vaccine in the countries having lesser research development capacities along with dense population being affected by the outbreak. The Chinese pharmaceutical plans to price the vaccine under 1,000 ($ 147) yuan for two doses.

In August Russia became the first country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine. Country’s President Vladimir Putin gave his personal endorsement to the vaccine by giving the dose of vaccine to his daughter while it was still in its Phase lll clinical trials. As many countries across the world are competing in the race to manufacture the best and the safest COVID-19 vaccine, World Health Organization has asked all the countries to focus on the safety of the vaccine. Finding such a vaccine which can completely extinguish the pandemic will be very difficult, added WHO.
