Despite the busy and fast-moving lives we are living today, we all have the memories of playing gully cricket every Sunday morning back in our childhood days. We can actually quote that emotional and nostalgic statement-“Those were the days”.
We all remember how we used to wait throughout the week for Sunday to come, and then with excitement, we would get up by 6 AM. It was a common ritual for us on every Sunday morning to call all our colony friends, gather in a big open park, set up stumps, wickets and then start playing cricket for hours until any parent came scolding for playing too long, we broke someone’s car or window glass or lastly if the child who owned the bat or wickets kit had to go back home.
It can be said that it was actually those days, in which the experience of playing gully cricket was no less than playing in a huge international stadium in some foreign country. Even, today if given a chance, we all would definitely stop back and play the very famous game of India, “gully cricket”. Realizing the fact that how much all Indians, enjoyed this game, today in our blog we have compiled some of the most cherished memories of playing “gull cricket”.
Some most common memories of gully cricket we all have!!
“Jiska bat, uski batting sabse pehle hogi”
I can tell with the little smile visible on your face that we all have had this common memory while playing the game. Back in those days, not everyone had a cricket bat, therefore; the whole group had to give little more importance to the one who owned the bat by letting him bat first.
“Jisne bhi ball ghar mein mari, vahi laeyga”
As mentioned earlier also, that there were no stadiums, we had to play in any nearby open space available. Therefore, it was very common for anyone to hit the ball so hard that it used to go inside any random house or building. Therefore, we all have had this rule of, “jisne bhi ball ghar mein mari, vahi laeyga”.
“You are no. 7, beech ka bichho ban ja”
Back in those days, every child used to eagerly wait for Sunday to come so that he or she can enjoy playing gully cricket. Therefore, it was always not possible to divide a team of an equal number of players. That is why in most of the cases 7th player or any other left out one was asked to become “beech ka bichho”.
“Beech ke bichho ko double batting milegi”
We all know that saying this, “beech ke bichho ko double batting milegi” was just a way of luring him to become one.
“Ye chhota hai lollipop dal de”
The next best and most common memory all of us have of gully cricket is that “ye chhota hai, lollipop dal de”. This used to happen when someone who was very small or did not know how to play cricket was doing the batting. Lollipop ball meant a ball which is thrown slowly and is easy to hit.
“Jeetne wali team first batting karegi agle match mein”
It seems that sweet memories of gully cricket just don’t want to end. Another lovely memory is that of saying, whichever teams win the current match will definitely get to bat first in the next match.
“Jisne bhi ball khoyi, vahi nayi ball khareed kar laeyga”
“Jisne bhi ball khoyi vahi nayi ball khareed kar laeyga” always made sure that every player in the match played extra cautiously in the fear of losing the ball.
“First ball par out hone pe kehna, ye to test ball thi”
The last but definitely not least was saying that this was a trial ball when someone got out on the first ball itself.
